New Jersey Erasure

BY MALEEHA SHEIKH

MAY 28, 2026

Known as the “armpit” of the United States, New Jersey has always been the underdog, especially when standing in the shadow of its flashier neighbor, New York. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup rounding the corner, it is unlikely that this will change. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, has been renamed the “New York, New Jersey Stadium” in preparation for the summer soccer match, and New Jerseyians are not happy.

Many residents are upset with the constant erasure of New Jersey, as MetLife is geographically in New Jersey. This is not the first time this has happened; with MetLife being the closest stadium to New York City, it often gets referred to as the New York stop for artists on tour.  Hit K-Pop Group Twice got bad publicity after referring to their MetLife crowd as “New York,” as did many artists who have done the same. Similarly, this erasure persists with iconic monuments, such as the Statue of Liberty; despite being geographically in New Jersey, it is often viewed as one of New York’s most famous attractions.

The main issue, like everything else, comes down to money. New Jersey taxpayers help pay for security, transportation to the stadium, and some promotional costs, while New York taxpayers are not fixed with that burden.

Junior Sahana Ramkumar said, “New York takes too much credit for stuff that is rightfully New Jerseyian. Why should New York get the name just because it is more aesthetic?”

New York carries aesthetics, fame, and reputation that New Jersey just does not have. Tourists and soccer fans from across the globe don’t know East Rutherford, but they do know New York City.

Junior Maria Joseph said, “I don’t think it's that serious. New Jersey is still in the name, and we get the tourism coming in. This New Jersey ‘nationalism' is a little silly.”

Overall, New York's reputation seems to trump New Jersey's regardless of what Jersey residents say, but that won’t stop New Jersey pride from shining through every time.
