With the MLB regular season entering its final weeks, the playoff race is heating up across both leagues. Teams are fighting not only for postseason sports, but also for valuable positioning before October baseball begins.
The Los Angeles Dodgers remain one of the National League’s top teams at 87-57 after defeating the Cincinnati Red on September 7. Teoscar Hernandez delivered the biggest hit of the game with a three-run home run, while pitcher Emmet Sheehan struck out 10 in his return to the Dodgers’ rotation.
Shohei Ohtani also returned to the lineup after missing four games because of injuries. Although he went 0-for-3 with a walk, Ohtani provided an important update Tuesday, saying he will most likely not pitch again this season. In response to the news, Junior Simran Arora said, “I’m a bit upset he’s not pitching, but I respect that he is focusing on one aspect of the game especially after the injury.”
The Philadelphia Phillies also made an impact this Monday, defeating the Atlanta Braves. Jesus Luzardo dominated from the mound, throwing a complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Kyle Schwarber provided the only run with his MLB-leading 43rd home run. However, the game itself “was kind of anticlimactic”, said Senior Vaishnavi Mutnuri. “I expected more, but at least the Phillies won.”
With less than 20 games left for most teams, every win has become crucial. As contenders battle for playoff positions, the final weeks of the regular season are setting the stage for an eventful baseball-filled October.
