Winter Cheer Season

Spirit is high on the East Brunswick Cheerleading team. The cheerleaders have been working hard since tryouts in the first week of June, and have continued to improve for the past 5 months to perfect their competition routines. With this preparation, the cheer team was ready to make their way onto the state championship mat.

On January 10, both the JV and varsity cheerleading teams won first place at the Impact Cheer and Dance Competition. As only the second competition of the season, this win clearly reflects their improvement. Both teams strive for perfection and are on the path for the state competition on February 22. Earlier in the month, on February 6, the varsity team will be competing for the GMC title.

JV captain Lanie Franks said, “I’m proud of how far this team has come since August." With UCA Cheer Camp kicking off the cheerleading season in August, the teams have had time to build a bond and work together for five months. This season JV is competing in the all girls cheer and dance division. Their routine consists of a cheer for the school at the beginning, then transitions to the traditional cheer routine with jumps, tumbling, stunts, pyramid and the dance.

Varsity main base and tumbler Joanna Granadiero said, “Competition season has been going good–I’ve been seeing a lot of improvement in the team and there is great potential this year. We have great chemistry on the team and we’re all striving for greatness. If we continue to go down this path, I truly believe we can win states. And JV has been working really hard, they're having a great season so far and both teams are heading down a great path.” This season included many team bonding opportunities: Cheer camp, East Brunswick scavenger hunt, and more. All these moments clearly reflect the strong friendships and bonds on these teams.

Varsity base and tumbler Brianna Kovarik said, “So far I think we’ve had a great start to our cheer season. We've had a lot of fun so far this season, we look forward to improving and competing at more competitions.” With every competition each team has used the judged critiques to edit and perfect their routines.  This season varsity is competing in the All-Music All-Girl division. Varsity’s routine really stands out this year; their competition music consists exclusively of Britney Spears songs, which brought out a great energy.

Overall, the cheerleading team this year, in both the fall and winter season, have really shown up in their competitions thanks to the dedication that each member on the team puts into the sport. The first place win at the Impact Cheer and Dance Competition is a culmination of over 5 months of diligent work, which ended up paying off in the end. The cheer season isn’t over yet for these cheerleaders, but their improvement is already apparent. Hopefully, the EB Cheerleaders' winning streak will carry on throughout their season, in GMCs and beyond.
