As the winter season starts to come to a close for many of East Brunswick's sports teams, it’s becoming more important to reflect on their successes. Our high school’s teams participate in the Greater Middlesex County tournaments, or GMCs, nearly every year. They play other teams in the county, and have the opportunity to win regional trophies for their team. In this year’s season, many of East Brunswick’s athletes in bowling, swimming, basketball, and track have found success during this tournament through pushing their own limits and relying on their team.

The East Brunswick swim team swept at GMCs, with many swimmers on both the girls and boys side placing within the top 20. “It went amazing because everyone was so ready for it, and everyone was very locked in and they did what they had to do. We won by a lot because everyone did really well at that meet,” says junior swimmer Brianna Zheng. “A lot of people also PR’ed”  Throughout the season, both the girls and guys had winning records, and the girls have been undefeated in their conference. The girls team also won sectionals for the 13rd consecutive year, which is a huge accomplishment for the athletes and their coaching.

East Brunswick’s winter track team also competed in their GMC tournament, and the athletes were very successful. Relay GMCs were on January 10th, and many people were able to medal in their events. Varsity jumper Michelle Mendelson said, “Everyone was cheering for each other, and despite it being cold, we were still able to run really well. It was really encouraging. Also, we talked to the people from the other school, which is something we don’t usually do, and that was nice.” Clearly, camaraderie and encouragement go a long way in sports, and can inspire athletes to compete harder, and achieve better results for both themselves and the team as a whole.

In early February, the girls and boys bowling teams participated in their GMC tournament, and both teams were able to make it to the quarterfinals this year. The boys, however, faced Middlesex (19-0), and lost. This was an improvement for the girls bowling team, however, as they lost in the first round of GMC’s last season.

The varsity basketball teams have been very successful this year. Both the boys and girls teams have strong winning records this season, and the boys are undefeated within their conference. The girls’ have also made it to their GMC finals in mid-February, where they lost to St. Thomas Aquainas. Overall, both teams have been extremely solid this year. In addition, the JV girls have moved on to their final game, which is being held on February 23rd, right here in East Brunswick. Students are excited to see how this match plays out, and hopefully see these athletes come out on top.

East Brunswick has extremely talented sports teams who have been showcasing their skills throughout this year. The athletes are competitive and dedicated to their craft, which is clearly shown through their successes at GMCs.
