Emerging teams, injuries, and growing MVP conversations have defined the NBA so far, and the same level of competition is expected as the season progresses.

In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder holds the top seed, followed closely by the San Antonio Spurs and the Denver Nuggets. There are MVP discussions surrounding Oklahomas’s rising star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Junior Renee Chou said, “I think SGA is a really good candidate for MVP. On average this season he has 32 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists. I think that’s really impressive and he put a lot of effort into getting to where he is.”

The Eastern Conference is just as competitive. The Detroit Pistons currently sit at the top with a 26-7 record, and they are followed closely by the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks. Boston’s success this season has come despite losing their star player, Jason Tatum, in last year’s finals. Tatum continues recovering from a torn Achilles and has started working out with the team again.

The Golden State Warriors also suffered a major setback: Jimmy Butler was injured with a torn ACL during a game against the Miami Heat. This loss has forced the team to adjust its starting lineup and offensive strategy.

The NBA All-Star game took place on February 15th. Sophomore Simran Arora said, “It was really interesting to watch. There was a lot of really good competition and I loved to see players from opposing teams play together.”

As the playoff race tightens, the second half of the season promises intensity, perseverance, and big moments.
