On Friday, May 23rd, East Brunswick High School hosted one of the most anticipated events of the school year – Relay for Life. Organized by the National Honors Society, this event stands as a beloved EBHS tradition dedicated to raising money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life was arguably the most energized day of the year, even with the rain, EBHS students kept the energy alive and the fun going. Activities were spread across the campus. On the field, the Art Club and Dance Crew brought color and sparkle with face paint and face glitter. The Dunk Tank was a spectacle where students plunged Mr. Pazinko and Dr. Bucior into freezing water. In the Media Center, besides a multitude of movies, Key Club had ‘Crocheting For a Cause’ and ‘Pre-Med Club’ hosted a questionnaire game creating a more relaxed atmosphere.
For those feeling sporty, the fields were filled with games including, a soccer match organized by FBLA, wiffle ball, and even an inflatable parkour course coordinated by the Student Council. When asked about her favorite activities, Junior Aahana Dalvi said, “I found it so amazingly fun to be outside, even though I was too short to win many of the games.” She later added, “I was utterly crushed on the parkour course by Sriya Ayalasomayajula.”
None of this would have been possible without the volunteers and teachers that brought it all together. Dr. Buchior said, “This is one of the best events of the school year,” extending a big thanks to “NHS for helping to organize it…[and] all of [the] club advisors, and student boards for helping to plan all these fun activities.” Each club’s effort helped unify the school toward a meaningful cause.
Not only did Relay for Life have a multitude of fun activities but it also had great food. For the first time, the event featured a Dunkin’ truck handing out free samples of their delicious refreshers. Chick-Fil-A sold hundreds of meals in the parking lot, and the 4 Boys ice cream stand right next to it was so popular that it ran out of cups by the end of the day.
However, as always, this Relay for Life held a sentimental note for the graduating seniors. Senior Harshita Nagirddy said, “It feels almost like our last field day in a way”, especially since it was one of the last school-wide events of the year. As Senior Katharine Goldberg said, “It’s awesome everyone showed up. It’s a nice way to end things”.
The day ultimately wrapped up with the survivor's lap– an emotional moment where cancer survivors from the EBHS community. along with their supporters, walked one last lap around the track as the whole student body cheered them on from the bleachers.
This year’s Relay for Life was one of the biggest and most successful EBHS has seen to date. The whole student body beautifully gathered together, despite the gloomy weather, and successfully raised over one thousand dollars for the American Cancer Society. As the school year soon concludes, Relay for Life serves as an example of the beautiful community EBHS has created, leaving a lasting impact, honoring survivors, and remembering those lost.
