This year, East Brunswick High School hosted their first Trick or Treats event: a Halloween-themed fair that brought together more than a dozen school clubs to show East Brunswick spirit through interactive activities for the community to enjoy. The event transformed classrooms into activity stations, where spooky Halloween elements blended with fun to entertain over 800 families. For its inaugural year, the event drew a strong turnout and operated smoothly because of supportive student and faculty involvement.
Each EBHS club developed an activity that connected Halloween themes with its subject area. One such example was Mu Alpha Theta, the school’s Math Honors Society, which had logic-based puzzles featuring zombies, vampires, and werewolves. Kids raced to solve equations to win a prize of candy.
All clubs remained busy throughout the night: the Pre-Med club hosted anatomy games using skeleton models and had a face painting station; Waksman Student Scholars let kids build (and eat) DNA models made of twizzlers and gummies, teaching them about genetics; and the German Honors Society ran a hat toss, with various members of the club standing outside their room to invite children inside.
STEM-focused clubs also had an important role in the event. Dr. Cohen said, “Code club and the video game design club ran two rooms: one with snap circuits and one with video games that were developed by East Brunswick students.” Both rooms highlighted student work, and gave younger kids the opportunity to interact with coded projects and basic engineering tools.
Student volunteers were essential to the success of Tricks and Treats. Many stayed after school, decorated rooms, explained activities, and handed out candy. As teachers, parents and kids ran around all night, the volunteers kept the energy high.
Sai Sahana Sitharaman, a Junior, said, “I was helping out Rho Khappa. It was really fun seeing all the little kids and helping run the activity in the room.”
Although this was a first for East Brunswick High School, it ended up being a perfect way for clubs to show off what they do. The hallways gleamed with string lights, fake spider webs, and all sorts of spooky decorations. Teachers dressed up as inflatable dinosaurs, pumpkins, or avocados. Some kids left with painted faces, others with pumpkins full of candy.
By the end of the evening the attendance, feedback, and smiles indicated that the first year of Tricks and Treats had been a success. The varied activities showcased the talent of EBHS students and provided a fun event for the community to enjoy, building a foundation for the high school’s future community involvement.
