Indie horror film Obsession has quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the year, earning widespread attention for its intense storytelling and thrill factor. The story follows characters Bear, a shy music-store employee, played by Micheal Johnston, and Nikki, his lifelong crush, played by Inde Navarrette. Both audiences and critics have praised the movie for its ability to blur the lines between reality and delusion, creating an experience that lasts long after the ending credits roll. The film has already grossed 80x its production budget, around $287.18 million worldwide in comparison to the 750K budget. The film’s gripping narrative and psychological depth have sparked strong reactions, ranging from acclamations to debates. 

Top tier marketing strategies drew viewers in before its initial release. Sophomore Joseph Samaan explained that “from the trailer that I saw, the acting was great and it seems like an amazing psychological thriller,” highlighting the carefully picked scenes that drew viewers in. “Text Me” posters were plastered across New York and LA featuring a picture of the antagonist, Nikki, and a number that could be texted, which then relayed terrifying messages from Nikki herself. This sense of mystery carried into the viewing experience, where the unsettling atmosphere and complex themes kept audiences on edge.

For some, the film’s intensity is exactly what made it memorable. “Dreadful,” is the one word senior Aanya Luthra used to capture the haunting impact the movie left on her after she watched it.

Ultimately, Obsession stands out not just for its strong reception, but for its bold storytelling and artistry. It has sparked conversations in classrooms and between friends with a diversity of opinions and speculations about the movie.
