As October comes to an end, Halloween movies and television shows fill streaming services with everything from supernatural mysteries to lighthearted comedies. For EBHS students looking for something to watch this Halloween season, several classics and newer favorites offer the perfect way to get into the spooky season.

Hocus Pocus is a classic that combines humor and nostalgia. Released in 1993, the comedy follows three witches who return to Salem after being accidentally brought back to life. As a group of kids attempts to stop them, the movie brings in an entertaining storyline alongside memorable characters. Its lighthearted plot makes it a fun movie to revisit every year.

“I like Hocus Pocus because it has the Halloween vibes without being too scary. The story is funny, and I like that it never gets boring,” said eighth-grader Charvi Mohan Kumar.

Another popular choice is The Nightmare before Christmas. The movie follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who discovers Christmas and becomes fascinated by the holiday. His attempts to bring Christmas to his own town creates a creative and unusual story. The combination of Halloween and Chrstmas makes the movie appealing as many students start looking forward to the  approaching holiday season.

For those who prefer something more mysterious, Wednesday is a television show that has a darker take on Halloween entertainment. The Netflix series follows Wednesday Addams as she attends Nevermore Academy and becomes involved in numerous mysteries surrounding the school. Although the show has darker moments, its humor and unusual characters keep the story entertaining rather than just frightening.

“I really enjoyed watching Wednesday because the plot is actually interesting. It is mysterious but also funny, and I feel like this is a newer show that so many students can relate to,” said EBHS Junior Anya Yamijala.

Coraline is another memorable choice for viewers who enjoy a little more suspense. The animated movie follows Coraline after she discovers a mysterious alternate version of her home and the people in her life. What initially seems like a better world gradually becomes more unsettling. The film’s increasingly suspenseful storyline and its unique characters make it more than just another scary Halloween movie.

Halloween movies do not have to be terrifying to capture the spirit of the season. Whether it was the familiar humor of Hocus Pocus, the creative story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, the mystery of Wednesday, or the unique world of Coraline, each one offers something different. For many students, the best Halloween movies are simply the ones that feel the most familiar. After all, sometimes the most enjoyable part of Halloween is getting comfortable, turning on a favorite movie and watching a story that never gets old.
