Twenty years after its first episode’s premiere, Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to maintain a strong fanbase with both original and new fans. But why does this show keep people coming back to watch it, decade after decade?

Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the story of Aang, a 12-year-old kid and the last of his kind, Airbenders. In this world, some people can “bend” one of the four elements—Water, Earth, Fire, or Air—but only one individual, widely known as the Avatar, can master all four of these elements. Aang is this Avatar.

The Avatar is known as a symbol of harmony and peace, reincarnating into a new generation after they pass. But when the Avatar before Ang died, Lord Ozai of the Fire Nation planned a massacre of the Airbenders to prevent a new one from rising against him. However, Aang escapes and accidentally encases himself within ice for a hundred years. When he awakens, a hundred years later, the world has been taken over by the Fire Nation. With the help of friends he meets along the way, it is up to Aang to restore peace and balance to the world.

This scratches only the surface of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Beyond its captivating plot, the show also contains rich worldbuilding, complex characters, and timeless themes that can resonate with audiences of all ages.

EBHS Alumni Steven Colon stated, “Cartoons like Avatar demonstrate the simplicity of our power. The show juxtaposes between people like Aang and Zuko, who were both on opposite sides of power, one wanting it and the other running from it, but in reality, they needed the opposite of what they were searching for.”

The show explores the complex themes of adolescence in their own search for power, and does so in a way that is entertaining to kids. Avatar: The Last Airbender can accomplish such a feat alone, making it worthy of its fame and fortune throughout the decades.

Sophomore Emily Dominguez commented, “Avatar has this epic feel to it that makes it so entertaining to watch over and over again, even though it was made years before I was born.”

Many resonate with the timeless show because of the depth embedded within it—exploring how one can change the world, grow from their experiences, and constantly learn, just as Aang does throughout the series.

So, here’s to Avatar: The Last Airbender on its 20th anniversary, a series continuing to inspire, entertain, and unite fans across generations!
