Fashion is Art at The Met Gala
MAY 28, 2026
The highly anticipated Met Gala took place on May 4, 2026, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s theme was “Costumer Art,” with the official dress code listed as “Fashion Is Art.” The dress code emphasized the body as a canvas, with many referencing famous pieces, turning well-known celebrities into real-life statues. Key looks include Heidi Klum, Sabrina Carpenter, and Emma Chamberlain.
Heidi Klum stood out to many for her hyper-realistic impersonation of the “Veiled Vestal” by 19th-century artist Raffaele Monti. Sabrina Carpenter attended in a custom Dior gown by Jonathan Anderson. This gown was made entirely out of film strips, offering a different interpretation of the theme, “Fashion is Art.” The film strips specifically pay tribute to Audrey Hepburn, featuring her with co-stars Humphrey Bogart and William Holden in the iconic 1954 film, Sabrina. “I enjoy how the Met Gala raises money for the Met and allows fashion designers to show off creativity, art, and skills that are unique to their craft,” said sophomore Catalina Su-Ortiz.
Emma Chamberlain wore a custom Mugler dress that was inspired by her father and impressionist works. The dress was hand-painted, featuring materials like acrylic ink and paint, and was meant to represent a living canvas. Chamberlain’s dress, featuring hues of blue and yellow, referenced Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, while the paint is meant to refer to her father, who was an oil/watercolor artist. “I loved seeing all of the looks, specifically Emma Chamberlain’s,” said junior Samantha Viella. “The Met Gala is significant to our society due to its reflection of trends and the importance of art, something that is reflected in a lot of the pieces created by our artists at EBHS.”
There were also several notable celebrity absences from this year’s event. Frequent attendees such as Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, and Bella Hadid opted out for reasons unknown to the public. Despite this, the Met Gala this year truly brought focus onto various mediums of art, garnering both criticism and adoration from EBHS students.
