Catherine O’Hara, a well-regarded actress, comedian, and screenwriter, recently passed away at the age of 71 on January 30, 2026. While many people today know O’Hara as the mother to Kevin McCallister in Chris Columbus’ blockbuster movie, Home Alone, O’Hara continued to leave an undeniable legacy that showed her career extended far beyond that role.

“I think Catherine O’Hara is obviously famous for her Home Alone movie, and having grown up watching them, it's sad to think that a little part of my childhood is now altered,” said Alex Kuchuk, senior at East Brunswick High School.

With a career that spanned over 50 years, O’Hara appeared in over 54 movies and between 80 to 100 television shows. She also appeared in songs like “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” in her feature in the hit movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Throughout her career, O’Hara was  awarded the Golden Globe Award for her outstanding performance in Schitt's Creek, a Primetime Emmy Award for her screenplay writing, the Canadian Comedian Award, and many more.

“Catherine O’Hara should be known and acknowledged for more than just her Home Alone movie, and her role as a talented actress should be regarded in a multifaceted way to deepen her remembrance,” said Maxwell Siegel, EBHS sophomore.

Though O'Hara's acting career has come to an end, her eccentric character and brilliance on the big screen have influenced actors for generations to come, making it clear that O'Hara's legacy will continue to live well beyond her lifetime.
