Ever since Wicked Part 1 concluded dramatically in late 2024, fans had been waiting on the edge of their seats for the sequel, Wicked: For Good. If you haven’t seen it yet, look away—light spoilers below! The sequel was announced by Universal Pictures in December 2024, igniting excitement among fans of both the original Broadway production and the 2024 movie.
Following the first film, propaganda perpetuated by Madame Marble tainted Elphaba’s name, framing her advocacy for the animals as malevolent. Wicked: For Good released in theaters on November 21st, explored how Glinda and Elpha navigated the challenges of a growing dictatorship in Oz.
However, fans’ opinions on Wicked: For Good were polarizing: Some were disappointed with the underdeveloped plot and uneven pacing of the story, while others felt it was a fantastic film with great cinematography. “I loved it. I thought it explored the deeper themes of the plot in a way that contrasts with the first movie. It was dark but very moving,” said EBHS student teacher Mr. Catalon.
In contrast, EBHS Junior Xibei Li believed it wasn’t as well-developed as its prequel: “I think it was just a quick money-grabber for the company. They like to follow up the first movie with a sequel.”
Recent reactions to Disney sequels echoed similar criticisms, with some viewers longing for the return to the “good old days” of 2-D animation and more originality. Nonetheless, most EBHS fans of the Wicked Broadway show are overjoyed to see their favorite story revived on the big screen.
